On the front page of today’s Morning Call was an article on the mosque to be located near Ground Zero in NYC. Below is a video statement and transcript of those remarks. My comments were misinterpreted slightly, and I absolutely do not speak for all Muslims – just myself – but the fact remains the reporter just wasn’t able to fit in my full thoughts on the matter, so the below is mainly to elaborate.

In New York, several blocks from the former site of the World Trade Center, an Islamic center and mosque is being considered. As a federal representative, it is my duty to defend the Constitution and the natural right to religious freedom as protected by the First Amendment. This freedom has its roots in how America was first settled by European religious outcasts. (Photo courtesy Rosino)

Therefore my stance is that if built on private property and approved by the local authorities, the citizens building the center are perfectly free to do so. I am sure the builders realize the impact of their actions, and the careful, sensitive path they will realistically need to tread if they choose to continue.

However, due to some minor misinterpretations of my position in the front page article in today’s Morning Call, I would like to elaborate:

9/11 remains a great scar on America’s soul. However, the fact remains that the threat of suicide terrorism is enhanced – NOT lessened – by the conventional armies stationed abroad in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Suicide terrorism is not caused by religious “fundamentalism.” Instead, suicide terrorist groups have a secular and strategic goal in mind – to compel modern democracies to withdraw military forces from territory that the terrorists consider to be their homeland. Period. Religion is NOT the root cause, and is mainly employed as a tool for recruitment and highlighting differences with the “invaders” from the native community. (I highly recommend reading Dr. Robert Pape’s “Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism” as academia’s best scientific study of suicide terrorism, see the video below.)

Again, Islamic fundamentalism was not the root cause of 9/11 or even suicide terrorism in general. This myth is just as nonsensical as blaming the religion and morals I was raised under, Catholicism, as the root cause of IRA (Irish Republican Army) car bombings in Northern Ireland. Even if the mainstream media has permitted this prejudice to pervade the public consciousness, this logic is nonsense.

For instance, Hezbollah’s first (and highly successful from their point of view) suicide terrorism campaign resulted in 241 Marine fatalities. This led to the rapid and complete withdraw of US Marines and French military forces from Lebanon in 1983. However, only 8 of the 38 identified Hezbollah suicide terrorists practiced Islam. The others either practiced Christianity or were secular. (Source: Pape’s book)

Specifically, Osama Bin Laden and his ilk follow Salafism which is a perversion of Islam. Al-Qaeda perverts the concept of jihad into a “holy war” that rationalizes the murder of innocent civilians. It is my understanding that those of the Shia and Sunni Islamic faiths in the United States peacefully believe in “jihad” as literally a “struggle” to maintain faith and piety in a greater sense, and in the right to personal self-defense when attacked in a lesser sense.

Of course, while speaking of the murder of innocent civilians, Americans must refuse the role of naive bystanders. We must realize hundreds of thousands of innocents have been killed in Iraq, and tens of thousands in Afghanistan. A huge percentage of these violent deaths were caused by our military. We must realize that the deaths of 5,642 American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan in unconstitutional, preemptive wars of aggression IN NO WAY compensates for the deaths of those that died on 9/11. Only the capture and trial of those responsible for 9/11 can in some way compensate for this tragedy.

The only effective and proper solution to defeat suicide terrorists is to capture the current generation and prevent the next generation from being created from collateral damage and blowback. Capture of the current generation will best be attained by small special ops forces acting under constitutional letters of marque and reprisal as explained here. Raising the reward for the capture of 9/11 criminals is also necessary, but also note that the American military believes there is less than 100 Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.

American soldiers are dying NOW in far-flung deserts and mountains EVERY DAY. These brave men and women have written a check for up to and including their lives to defend their country. These checks are being cashed out into coffins in what I believe to be a negligent and fruitless manner.

If we aspire to be a just nation ruled by laws we must resolve to never ask our military men and women to engage in unconstitutional warfare and nation-building missions.

I do not wish to see the day when not only essential civil liberties are revoked by the PATRIOT Act – as they are today, not only when more than 1 in 8 Americans are living on food stamps – as they are today, and not only when employment is crushed by the economic suppression of the federal government – as it is today, but religious freedom is also lost.

I saw firsthand the evils the lack of liberty brings when I lived abroad in communist China, and I’ll be damned if I do nothing to stop these very same evils in my home country.

We must stop the endless debt and the endless wars. Yours in liberty,

These remarks were given July 30th, 2010, at the campaign’s Freedom Concert. For those unaware, the campaign has been featured on four (4) front pages (see 2 of them here) of both of the district’s key newspapers during the past 6 days due to incumbent demanding that I be barred from debating him and also a character assassination attempt over a band that had volunteered to play at the concert.

Concerning the recent media circus concerning the controversial band that was removed from this concert, I thought it best to say a few words not just about the freedom of expression protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, but also how best we should use these freedoms while moving forward as a campaign.

First of all, the Constitution is often misunderstood. It’s purpose is NOT to run everyone’s life, but rather the exact opposite – to PROTECT the people from the government. Our founders recognized that governments are capable of horrific tyrannies. If we look through history, the examples are all too frequent. While it is easy to forget the horrors of war while it is not in front of your face – especially on beautiful days like today – the last century of humankind has been extremely bloody.

Almost all of the killing has been done by governments and political groups. During the past 100 years, an estimated 170 million have died at the hands of governments, and of these perhaps up to 70% were civilians.

In my travels abroad, I’ve walked through Nazi concentration camps, the Killing Fields in Cambodia, the site of the Nanjing Massacre in China and places all over Asia where the Japanese committed WW2 atrocities, and these experiences has affected me deeply.

I used to often wondered why these state-sponsored killings occur until I came to the realization that tyranny ends only when we as individuals cease to support our own serfdom.

The politicians whisper “Give us all your liberties, and we will keep you safe.” The truth is that without the liberty and rule of law guaranteed under the Constitution, there is no safety – from the government. Those that scream the loudest to give up our essential liberties for temporary safety are all too often chicken-hawks who have never served a day of combat in their lives.

Charlie Dent sits on Homeland Security and has been one of the strongest supporters of the PATRIOT Act. Remember those Democrats who under Bush used to complain incessantly about it, but once in power, guess what? In February, the House voted to reauthorize it, 315-97. In the Senate, the bill passed unanimously, 100-0.

Section 218 gives a secret court the ability to authorize secret searches, wiretaps of private conversations, and examine any financial transaction of Americans. Previously, under the Fourth Amendment and the rule of law, police forces had to present a warrant and also describe what items they are searching for and why.

Section 213 of the PATRIOT Act not only authorizes the FBI to secretly break into your home, rummage through it, but does not even inform you that the government has committed this until 18 months have passed, and may suspend this notification indefinitely.

Sections 505 and 215 authorizes the government to secretly examine your private information provided it is somehow linked to terrorism. This includes searching the third-party holders of your financial, library, travel, video rental, phone, medical, or places of worship without your consent or even knowledge.

Any financial transaction over $10,000 is reported to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, a sub-branch of the Treasury Department, as possible criminal or terrorist activity [per Section 365] before being processed.

Section 412 enables the government to hold suspected terrorists indefinitely and to suspend habeas corpus. Habeas corpus is the ability of those held to appear before a court and determine why they are being held and challenge whether their detention is lawful.

The Congress has failed to check the executive branch’s assumption of powers to place “enemy combatants” in secret prisons and torture them.

There was an interview done in Hermann Goering’s cell at the Nuremburg Trials for war crimes before he committed suicide. For those unaware, Goering was one of Hitler’s aides for many years and in charge of the Nazi Air Force, the Luftwaffe during WWII. The interviewer said he did not think that the common people are very thankful for leaders who bring them war and destruction. Here is Goering’s reply:

HG: Why, of course, the people don’t want war. Naturally, the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece?

Interviewer: There is one difference. In a democracy, the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars.

HG: Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.

Isn’t it almost cute how the interviewer replied. “Only Congress can declare wars.” Little did he know that just 4 years later, the United States would start its ‘police action’ war in Korea, and the United States would start wars, many preemptive, without a formal constitutional declaration of war for the next 60 years. All in the name of a greater good, whether the flavor of the day be communism during the Cold War or terrorism today.

If we are to live in a free and open society, dissent should not just be tolerated; it should be ENCOURAGED. We as individuals must have freedom of speech and constantly use it in times like these. This is why I have been very adamant to implement the “Our Open Office” concept that most here are familiar with – because each individual deserves a public voice to instruct THEIR public servant and employee.

What about the freedom of the press? One of the presidents of this country, JFK, said all there is to say about the freedom of the press:

“… that is why our press was protected by the First Amendment — the only business in America specifically protected by the Constitution — not primarily to amuse and entertain, not to emphasize the trivial and the sentimental, not to simply “give the public what it wants” — but to inform, to arouse, to reflect, to state our dangers and our opportunities, to indicate our crises and our choices, to lead, mold, educate and sometimes even anger public opinion…”

The current media has failed far short of Kennedy’s model. Today’s national media largely persists as a tool of the political elite to help divide and conquer the American public.

And in the grand scheme of things, what is more important? In my case, a poor choice of bands for a concert, or addressing the ENDLESS DEBT and ENDLESS WAR that are ruining our country?

The favorite strategy of the political elite, whether Republican or Democrat, is “Divide-and-Conquer.” They will prey upon our differences in Race, Skin Color, Gender, and religious creeds in attempts to turn us upon ourselves. They will try to set our Citizens Senior against our country’s young people. They will try to set the Rich, the Poor, and the Middle Class at each others’ throats for this is the ONLY way they can stay in power.

There is really only solution, only one way for a campaign like mine to win against the Republocrats, Twiddledee and Twiddledum. Where they preach lies, war, hate, and poverty, we must answer with the truth, peace, love, and prosperity. We must all exercise our freedom of speech and expression as we never have before. In a way, we must become the press.

Many of you during the recent character assassination campaign Dent and Callahan are waging against myself have already done so with Letters to the Editor – over 9 have been published in newspapers so far this week. Many of you have been commenting on online article threads and talking with friends. I appreciate it very much, and in the coming months I will need a much more of your help.

If you use a computer, join up with the campaign over Facebook and other social media and keep sharing articles and ideas I’ve written about.

If you like to write, start up a blog covering the campaign and contrast the opponents. Don’t spare me any criticism either. Register it with the local newspapers. The Republocrats already have their attack dogs in place.

Later in the campaign we will have plenty of door-to-door work to do. If you are comfortable talking to strangers, help get out the vote by speaking with them. If not, I need your help to do flyer drops, prepare mailings, and make phone calls.

Thank you all for donating to the campaign and being here tonight.

In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read in three spots in Pennsylvania following the Fourth of July. One such spot was Easton’s historic Center Square. 233 years later, a small band of 300 patriots showed up once more. Here is the first speech (and video!) I ever gave a year ago on July 3rd, 2009 at the fountain in Easton’s Center Square, Pennsylvania.

This Fourth of July I will be around the area collecting the signatures to get on the ballot in November. Feel free to help at any of these events, as freedom sure isn’t free!

On July 15th, 1776, 72 patriots led by Benjamin Franklin issued Pennsylvania’s Constitution. One sentence read: QUOTE That ALL POWER is originally inherent in, and consequently derived from, the PEOPLE; therefore all officers of government are their trustees and SERVANTS, and at ALL TIMES ACCOUNTABLE to them.

Our founders clearly realized that all power stems from the PEOPLE, from US, and all officers of government are NOT masters, but SERVANTS.

Most importantly, the Constitution was written under the principle of “positive grant.” What “positive grant” means is that the government can ONLY exercise the powers which are specifically granted to it and nothing more. The Constitution is not the AUTHORITY over our lives, it is simply the LAW meant to CONSTRAIN the actions of government.

However, over time the federal government has slowly and steadily taken more and more power from the people, from our local and state governments.

Look at the bailouts of the banks, insurance companies, car companies, and investment firms. There is NOTHING – there is NOTHING – in the Constitution that gives Congress or the Federal Reserve the power to do ANY of this.

So what to do? What can be done against this government? What are the BEST actions that people who believe in the rule of law, who believe in freedom, do?

What I favor is a strong shift back to the America that our founding fathers and mothers had in mind. If we can shift these powers back closer to the People, from the federal governments to the State and local governments, the better off we all will be. The more local each issue becomes, the more voice, the more power each individual has, and the happier we will all be.

The 4th of July for the Patriots of ‘76 was only the start of a long march towards freedom and liberty. It is in their spirits that we, from our families FIRST, from our local communities SECOND, and from the State of Pennsylvania THIRD must rise up and defend freedom from a government that disrespects the Rule of Law and the boundaries of its Constitutional powers!

We can start and WIN this revolution of our lifetimes TODAY if only a few good women, a few good men are brave enough to place their bodies and their minds between our families and the Establishment, this government that acts as if the Constitution were just “a piece of paper!”

As for myself, I have decided to run for political office even though I have no prior political experience. I have a very strong message to share and a plan to implement accountability and transparency, to return the ‘money power’ from the government to the people where it belongs, and to fiercely defend individual liberty and the rule of law.

I have decided to run as private citizen, unaffiliated with any political parties. I do not desire to represent either the Democrat or Republican Parties, I desire to represent US, the people of this district whom I am willing to serve.

I believe that the current Republican and Democrat representatives have been leading our country down the path of both MORAL and ECONOMIC ruin.

Our two-headed, one-party political scene is not the sharp divide the politicians and the media want us to believe. The true difference between the Democrat and Republican politicians in power is no greater than the choice between picking Coke or Pepsi at a supermarket.

To me, the real choice today is simple.

We either choose LIBERTY or we choose TYRANNY!

We either choose PROSPERITY for those who earn it or POVERTY for us all!

TODAY we decide between a REPUBLIC of LAWS or MOB RULE by the Gang in Washington!

TODAY we decide if we are Women and Men of PRINCIPLE or if we will let “politics as usual” and the “lesser of two evils” ruin our lives and the lives of our children!

What I would like MORE THAN ANYTHING is to join with a team of candidates who HAVE the spirit of ‘76, who SHARE the same principle and belief in individual liberty as I do, and are focused on saving our great country from those who threaten it, THE TRUE ENEMIES DOMESTIC.

America was conceived in liberty, and I will not let our Republic fall to the cowards who defile her without a bitter fight. These cowards will do whatever they can to remain in power, to control us by debasing our money and throwing away our liberties as if they were garbage. Our Republic was not established by cowards, and cowards have no chance of preserving it!

Their favorite strategy is “Divide-and-Conquer.” They will prey upon our differences in Race, Skin Color, Gender, and religious creeds in attempts to turn us upon ourselves. They will try to set our Citizens Senior against our country’s young people. They will try to set the Rich, the Poor, and the Middle Class at each other’s throats for this is the ONLY way they can stay in power.

We must act together, we must recognize that we are all Americans, we are all on the SAME SIDE. As our founders signed the Declaration of Independence, Ben Franklin said, “We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we will all hang separately.”

As your federal representative, I will make no pretensions to usurp your right to self-ownership and tell you how to run your life. Those decisions are not mine to make – nor should they be. One does not step into a voting booth in November and magically cede away their individual sovereignty.

Likewise, one cannot step into the voting booth and justly vote to strip away the individual sovereignty of others to their life, their liberty, and their property. My job function is to defend the Constitution, and protect the people from the tyranny of the federal government.

The United States of America was founded under the concept of sovereign states. Beyond the powers or prohibitions expressly listed in the Constitution, all other powers were left to the states or to the people per the 10th Amendment.

I fully recognize the divide-and-conquer tactics used by the two-headed, one-party establishment on the controversial social issues listed below. Please understand that I will always respect your opinion and always defend your ability to voice your opinion and petition YOUR government for redress of grievances with the novel-yet-simple “Our Open Office” concept.

State sovereignty will result in legislation that is more customized to the desires of Pennsylvanians. The more local each sensitive issue becomes, the more control the people have over their representatives, and the more freedom we will all have from one-size-fits-all federal control.

Abortion

There is no issue that is quite as sensitive as abortion. As a male, this issue will never directly affect me, and therefore I have been especially attentive to listening to perspectives of fellow residents in the district.

“Pro-life” advocates take the position that a fetus is a living person and therefore killing a fetus prior to birth is a criminal act. If seen as a criminal act, then under the US Constitution the federal government has no role or power to play, as this matter of criminal law is reserved to the individual states. This moral stance is all too often lightly dismissed by the “pro-choice” camp. Per Roe v. Wade, states cannot prohibit abortions until the fetus becomes “viable,” or can potentially live outside the mother’s womb at approximately 24 to 28 weeks of gestation. As federal Congressman:

I will not support the use of federal tax dollars to fund abortions. Everyone must realize that forcing taxpayers to contribute towards acts they find as morally reprehensible criminal acts is utterly immoral. I wish to be clear here and state that even spending a single dollar on abortions in an otherwise 99% beneficial and constitutional bill still creates the grounds to vote against the entire bill. This stance is wholly compatible and consistent with the campaign’s health care plank.

Women have the unquestionable right to choose to birth a child. Childbirth should be a proud and happy event in a woman’s life. However, it is also a decision that requires love, maturity, and considerable financial resources. Those who are most adamant about preventing abortions should also be the most generous in providing charity, financial aid, and adoption resources for mothers who choose to carry pregnancies to term.

I have previously made a campaign promise to only accept the median household income for the district for my salary and will donate the remainder to local non-profit hospitals. Since my salary is taxpayer-funded, I will specify these donations cannot be used for abortions.

The “pro-choice” camp believes a woman has a right to the self-ownership of her own body and can decide whether to carry a fetus to birth. The “pro-life” camp all too often rejects this argument without examining the reasoning behind it.

If a pregnancy ever threatens a mother’s life, shouldn’t the mother have the ability to choose to abort the child to save her own life? It should be plain and apparent that as the life-giver she should.

Is it not abhorrent that in cases of violent rape or incest a woman could be forced to bear a child and also provide nurturing and her time and financial resources for many years? In the case of an unwanted pregnancy – or a pregnancy that becomes unwanted – the true choice for a woman is NOT simply abortion versus no abortion. The choice is either abortion or compulsory childbearing. The decision between abortion or motherhood is an enormous responsibility, and women only choose abortions when the alternative is impossible to bear.

We should also consider the consequences of past times when abortions were banned by the state. Even when the state outlawed abortions, this did NOT stop abortions from occurring. In past times, women were forced to pay enormous amounts of money on the black market, falsely claim they were violently raped, endure the indignities of backstreet abortions with their increased risks of infection, death, genital damage, and permanent mutilation. I do not support regressing to these oppressive times.

As your federal Congressman, I will defend a woman’s right to choose under the current federal law. Women cannot legitimately be forced into carrying and having a baby against their will.

Second Amendment – Right to Bear Arms

The Second Amendment is NOT about hunting or even self-defense. The Second Amendment protects your natural right to freedom from tyranny by the use of force. As the colonists learned from the British in 1776, it matters not if the tyrants come from our own government.

At no point would I vote for limits of any sort on the right to bear arms as a federal congressman, which is a clear difference from my Republocrat opponents. There is simply no authorization in the Constitution that delegates this power from the people and the states to United States Congress. States and localities can decide details for themselves based on state constitutions and local preferences. This critical right is described in more detail here.

Gay Marriage or Civil Unions

One of my principles is that individuals have the right to live their lives however they wish, as long as they do not interfere with the equal rights of others. Therefore, individuals can mutually associate as they wish – whether they are a man and a woman, two women, or two men makes no difference to me.

Certainly society should not erect barriers between two individuals that love each other. I have no issues with gay or lesbian couples associating. Conversely, as individuals are free to NOT associate with others as well. By the same logic, I have no issues with religious groups banning gay or lesbian marriages as these are groups that individuals freely choose to associate themselves with. Gay or lesbian couples are free to associate themselves into their own groups as well.

As a federal Congressman, there is no power granted to Congress to decide upon this matter, so per the 10th Amendment I would defer the issue to the states. I would vote against any federal legislation to ban same-sex marriages as the Republocrat incumbent, Charlie Dent, attempted to do in HJ RES 88.

The federal government currently discriminates in favor of married couples or those in civil unions by offering them tax breaks. While I am against the entire Marxian concept of taxing individuals’ incomes as immoral and unnecessary, if a state deems a gay or lesbian couple to be married or in a civil union, these couples should have claim to the same tax breaks. The purpose of government is to protect the liberty of the individual – NOT to grant special privileges to special groups.

The “War” on Drugs

In my position as a federal Congressman, I would act to phase out federal involvement in the “war” on drugs. While I would not specifically act to legalize illegal drugs, I would ask to move this issue to the States per the Constitution. Just like the banning of alcohol required a constitutional amendment in 1919, so does any banning of other drugs. We should keep in mind that – just like the “War” on Drugs – Prohibition was an abject failure. Prohibition resulted in mobsters like Al Capone, high levels of violence from organized criminal groups, and rampant corruption in local police forces. Sound familiar?

On an international level, Presidents of Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia all plead that the “war” on drugs has been a total disaster for their countries. In Afghanistan, the US occupation has created unprecedented record levels of opium production, especially as the Taliban had banned opium prior to the invasion.

I take the position that the entire federal sections of the Controlled Substances Act should be transitioned back to state control. This could be accomplished by simply copying the act onto the state books and thereafter let the States alter them if they wish. Obviously, decisions on the state level would be closer to the people, allowing each area to customize their laws and increasing overall satisfaction.

A limited and decentralized government with inherent checks and balances results in more self-rule by local communities, and hence providing local diversity and overall greater satisfaction for individuals. Individuals can always vote with their feet, and move to areas not affected by laws they strongly disagree with.

In particular, the federal banning of industrial hemp, which is not a drug that can be smoked, is ridiculous. Hemp is a cash crop that could be used as a source as food, fiber, biofuel, fabric, or building material. Currently, America imports hemp from Canada, France, and China. Allowing farmers to grow this crop would be the first big step back towards maturity on this topic – plus industrial hemp’s cross-pollination would decrease the potency of all the illegally-grown marijuana.

However, I also want to stress that this by no means should be taken to mean that I personally endorse the use of any drugs, simply that it is not a proper constitutional responsibility of the federal government. Personally I have made a campaign pledge to not drink alcohol, smoke, or use drugs and will continue this policy when elected. I believe constituents should never have to worry about their representative’s mind being altered by drugs of any type, regardless as to whether they are socially-acceptable drugs like alcohol or not.

Illegal Immigration

There are no indications that the government will act to secure the borders. It failed to secure the borders after the 9/11 attacks, and to believe it will do so now is naive.

It is a constitutional duty of the federal government to defend the borders. This is best done by using the military to protect the borders with customs officials at land, sea, or air access points. I believe that it is the duty of the Department of Defense to protect our borders, not the Department of Homeland Security. I support state sovereignty and the right of the states to defend their own borders when they so choose.

Legal immigration should be moderated at the discretion of the States per the Constitution. Illegal immigration is, of course, illegal.

From Article 1, Section 8, Congress is given the power “to establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization…” I believe the most effective containment actions to take are to remove the congressional subsidies for illegal immigrants. For example, “anchor babies” create an incentive for foreign nationals to deliver their babies on American soil, as they currently become American citizens. I disagree with this policy. Congress allows tax dollars to be spent on benefits for illegal immigrants. This is a slap in the face of both taxpayers and those who immigrated legally.

Closing Remarks

It is citizens waking up to evils of the centralized government in Washington that gives me hope as I continue to spread the message of liberty, peace, and prosperity.

Remember – regardless of whatever charades Republocrat career politicians play to fritter away your personal freedoms, this much will always hold true. YOU OWN YOUR SELF. Just as true is that you do not own others.
