Independent for Congress on Afghanistan – Bring Troops Home Now
For immediate release
Jake Towne, independent candidate for U.S. Congress in 2010, has an answer for President Obama’s indecision on how many more additional troops to send to a war zone – send NONE, and instead bring the troops home NOW. Towne is for a rapid, immediate and orderly withdrawal of all troops from both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
To deal with the problem of Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda, Towne believes that constitutional letters of marque and reprisal – used previously to deal with the Barbary pirates – are the best solution to deal with small groups. Letters of marque and reprisal are warrants issued by Congress to specified parties giving them permission to commit what would otherwise be illegal acts as they capture “marked” enemies or seek retribution. America currently has 68,000 troops in Afghanistan to combat less than 100 al-Qaeda members with “no bases, no means of launching attacks” per National Security Advisor James Jones.
With the economy in tatters and border security a joke, Towne says, “We need to leave by our own free will before the dollar crashes due to the reckless spending of Congress and skyrocketing levels of national debt. Redeployment of troops from Afghanistan to protect the U.S. border with access points controlled by a Border Patrol will do far more to protect the nation.”
Towne states that since war was never declared, it is therefore illegal and unconstitutional. Furthermore, the war does not meet the criteria of a just war – neither the Taliban nor Pakistan’s military attacked the United States before the invasion. The Taliban also attempted diplomacy and offered to handover bin Laden in October 2001, which was rejected. The “collateral damage” to Afghan and Pakistan villages, towns and infrastructure, and many tens of thousands of civilian deaths, and especially the 5,278 dead American soldiers since 9/11 are all out of proportional with the damage suffered on 9/11.
Towne also warns that Afghanistan is not nicknamed the “graveyard of empires” without reason, and lists past American foreign policy actions such as the CIA sponsorship of Al-Qaeda followed by the abandonment of the country to the Taliban. He also reveals that since the American invasion, opiate trade has not shrunk but instead doubled per a United Nations study.
Citizens wishing to ask Towne questions can attend the first “Towne Hall” to be held Wednesday, November 24 at 7 PM at the Bethlehem Township Community Center on 2900 Farmersville Road.
